Iga Swiatek will be hoping her preparation for the US Open can continue as she enters the third round of the Canadian Open. The Polish superstar made it to the quarter-finals of Wimbledon but has had a slightly disappointing season by the very high standards placed on her, only winning the French Open. Although she won the Polish Open, Swiatek is yet to win a WTA 1000 tournament this year with two final appearances, losing in Dubai and Madrid.
The defending US Open champion, Swiatek didn’t fare too well in Canada before last year’s tournament, falling at this stage to Beatriz Haddad Maia — in fact, Swiatek is yet to make it past the third round of the Canadian Open. Earning a bye to the second round as top seed, Swiatek has already beaten Czech opposition at the Canadian Open, beating Karolina Pliskova 7-6 (6), 6-2.
This is a repeat of the French Open final, with Karolina Muchova having taken Swiatek to three sets at Roland Garros before eventually succumbing to the Pole’s dominance, so there will be a bit of revenge on the mind. After reaching the final of the French Open, Muchova had a very disappointing first-round exit at Wimbledon and she also underwhelmed at the Polish Open, losing in the round of 16 despite being the second seed.
With a lot of the higher ranked players taking part in Montreal, Muchova is the 14th seed for the Canadian Open and had to enter in the first round — with only the top eight receiving a bye. In that first round match, Muchova beat Anastasia Potapova in straight sets before beating Sorana Cirstea 7-5, 6-4 last time out.
