Ranked No.1 in the world, Iga Swiatek is the dominant force in women’s tennis right now. The Polish star has won 44 of her 48 matches in 2024 so far, including a current run of 18 straight victories to claim Madrid and Italian Open titles and reach the final here. Swiatek has already won four WTA titles this year but hasn’t won a Grand Slam since winning this very tournament in 2023, exiting in the third round of the Australian Open most recently. Swiatek has improved greatly since then and has sent out a message to the rest of the pack with straight-set wins over the likes of Coco Gauff and Marketa Vondrousova here.

In Paolini, she faces an opponent in uncharted territory. The Italian is only ranked 15th in the world and this is the first time she’s ever gone past the fourth round of a Grand Slam tournament. That said, Paolini has already won the Dubai Championships in 2024, where she’s won 22 of over 32 matches overall. At this tournament alone, Paolini has dumped out wonderkid Mirra Andreeva — who beat world No.2 Aryna Sabalenka in the quarter-finals — as well as world No.4 Elena Rybakina.

This will be the third head-to-head meeting between these two players but the first since 2022. Swaitek won the previous two in straight sets.
