Ranked first and second in the world, respectively, Swiatek and Sabalenka have dominated women’s tennis in the last few years, winning six Grand Slam titles between them since 2020, among a host of other competitions. Given the pair are just 22 and 25 years old, this could be a rivalry that will define the sport in years to come. It’s certainly left its mark in Madrid, with this a repeat of last year’s final, which Sabalenka won as part of two titles in three years.
Swiatek has been formidable in reaching the final in Madrid, dropping just one set across her five matches so far, most recently knocking out American Madison Keys in straight sets. The Polish star has now won an incredible 31 of her 35 matches across 2024 so far, including seven out of eight on clay.
Sabalenka has had to work a little harder to make it to the final, winning four of her five matches in Madrid 2-1. The most recent of those narrow wins came against 2022 Wimbledon champion Elena Rybakina, showing real determination to come back after losing the opening set 6-1. The Belarusian hasn’t been as busy as Swiatek this year, but has still won 20 of her 25 matches to date, including six of seven on clay.
This will be the 10th meeting between these two stars, with Swiatek holding a 6-3 advantage, though as mentioned, Sabalenka won in their Madrid Open final meeting last year.
