Ranked first and second in the world, respectively, Swiatek and Sabalenka have dominated women’s tennis in the last few years, winning six Grand Slam titles between them since 2020, among a host of other competitions. Given the pair are just 22 and 25 years old, this could be a rivalry that will define the sport in years to come. It’s certainly left its mark in Rome, with this their second WTA final meeting in May alone after Swiatek beat Sabalenka 2-1 in Madrid exactly two weeks ago.
Swiatek has once again been formidable in reaching the final in Rome, failing to drop a single set so far across her five matches, most recently knocking out American star Coco Gauff in straight sets. The Polish star has now won an incredible 37 of her 43 matches across 2024 so far and if she can get over the line here, it’ll already be her fourth WTA 1000 title of the year.
Sabalenka has had to work a little harder to make it to the final, winning two of her five matches in Rome 2-1. The most recent of those narrow wins came against Elina Svitolina, showing real determination to come back after losing the opening set 6-4. Sabalenka then went on to take back-to-back victories against world No.10 Jelena Ostapenko and American veteran Danielle Collins to reach the final. The Belarusian hasn’t been as busy as Swiatek this year, but has still won 25 of her 31 matches to date.
This will be the 11th meeting between these two stars, with Swiatek holding a 7-3 advantage, including that Madrid Open final just a couple of weeks ago.
