Hubert Hurkacz has reached the quarter-finals of the Australian Open for the first time after defeating 21-year-old Arthur Cazaux, who played with maturity and aggression in his first appearance at Melbourne Park. Despite Cazaux’s strong start to the match and racing to a 3-0 lead in the first set, Hurkacz managed to survive 18 aces from his opponent and did not concede another break point. This was due to Hurkacz winning 91% of his first serves and 76% of his second serves. Cazaux, an alternate at last year’s Next Gen ATP Finals in Jeddah, put up a good fight but could not overcome Hurkacz’s powerful and consistent play.
“I served well and he served well as well,” Hurkacz said. “I needed to stay aggressive and I was very happy with today’s performance.
“I haven’t been to this stage of a Grand Slam many times, so I’m super excited.”
Daniil Medvedev defeated Francisco Borges in a thrilling match at the Rod Laver Arena. After winning the first two sets 6-3, 7-6(7-4), Medvedev lost his composure in the third set and was broken by Borges. However, he regained focus and broke back to win the set 7-5. In the fourth set, Medvedev dominated and won 6-1. Despite hitting several double faults in the third set, Medvedev served well throughout the match, hitting 13 aces and winning 75% of first-serve points.
Hurkacz has a 3-2 record over Medvedev, although the Russian is 2-1 on hard courts against the Pole.
