With just two defeats in his last 10 matches, Hurkacz finds himself on a good run of form. The Pole has climbed to No.9 in the world with 23 wins from 33 matches overall in 2024, but for all his good work, he’s yet to reach a major final this year. That’s something he’ll want to put right but first, he must make amends for his disappointing defeat to Taylor Fritz at the Madrid Open at the end of April.

Up next, he has the small matter of facing the Italian Open’s most successful men’s player of all time. Nadal is, of course, no longer at the peak of his powers, but nobody can ignore the 10 previous titles he’s won at this tournament, most recently going all the way in 2021. The Spanish veteran is in the twilight of his career but has proven he can still pose a threat to his younger counterparts, making it through three rounds of the Madrid Open before losing to Jiri Lehecka, while he’s already seen off Zizou Bergs of Beglium at this tournament; the latest of seven wins from 10 games overall this year.

These two players have, somehow, managed to avoid each other over the years, with this their first-ever head-to-head meeting.
