Great Britain will be hoping to take a big step towards reaching the Davis Cup quarter-finals on Friday. The nation secured their spot in the group stage with a 3-1 victory over Colombia, coming from one match down thanks, in part, to Cameron Norrie’s singles efforts. Norrie is the leading man for Great Britain’s Davis Cup team this year, ranked 17th in the world.
Joining Norrie in the team are Dan Evans, Andy Murray, Jack Draper and Neal Skupski, the latter the world no.3 for doubles. Up against Australia in their first tie, Great Britain stormed to a 2-0 lead with Draper beating Thanasi Kokkinakis and Evans beating Alex de Minaur, both in three sets. Great Britain did lose the doubles match against Matthew Ebden and Max Purcell, but the win was already secured.
Switzerland, meanwhile, beat Germany 3-2 to qualify for the group stage but must now win against Great Britain to keep their quarter-final hopes alive. Defeat would see them exit the tournament with one tie left to play. Switzerland have Stan Wawrinka as their star man, and he has been joined in the team by Dominic Stricker, Marc-Andrea Husler, Leandro Riedi and Alexander Ritschard.
The main problem for Switzerland is that none of their players are doubles specialists, with Wawrinka also the highest ranked that at 217th in the world. It showed in their first tie against France, as Switzerland were beaten 3-0, winning just one set. Stricker took a lead against Adrian Mannarino before losing 2-1, while Wawrinka was beaten in straight sets by Ugo Humbert. Wawrinka and Husler then combined for a straight-set defeat to Nicolas Mahut and Edouard Roger-Vasselin.
