Novak Djokovic continues his preparation for the US Open in Cincinnati, a tournament he has historically done well in. The Serb has won the Cincinnati Open on two of the past three occasions he has taken part, but this will be his first appearance at the tournament since 2020 — when he beat Milos Raonic in the final.
Even when he wasn’t winning the Cincinnati Open, it was a rare sight to see a final not include Djokovic, with the Serb a runner-up on five occasions before finally winning in 2018. After missing the Canadian Open due to fatigue, Djokovic made his return to action in the second round at Cincinnati and took the first set 6-4 before opponent Alejandro Davidovich Fokina had to retire.
Gael Monfils, meanwhile, entered the Cincinnati Open off the back of a good performance in Canada. The former world No.6 (who now isn’t even in the top 200), reached the quarter-finals in Toronto, with a win over Stefanos Tsitsipas along the way, before ultimately losing to eventual champion Jannik Sinner in three sets.
The Frenchman’s time in Cincinnati started with a first-round match against seeded Cameron Norrie and despite losing the first set, Monfils came from behind to advance. Then, last time out, Monfils beat Australian Alex de Minaur in straight sets, 7-5, 6-4.
