It’s an all-American clash in the quarter-finals of the US Open. Frances Tiafoe is the 10th seed at the US Open after has been a year of growth on the court even though there aren’t many standout performances at the big tournaments. In the fourth round last time out, Tiafoe beat wildcard Rinky Hijikata 6-4, 6-1, 6-4 to seal another quarter-final.
Ben Shelton, meanwhile, is in the main draw at the US Open for the second time and has already equalled his best ever run at a Grand Slam. The American started the year with a run to the quarter-finals of the Australian Open before losing to compatriot Tommy Paul in four sets. Shelton underwhelmed at the French Open and Wimbledon, losing in the first and second rounds respectively.
At Flushing Meadows, Shelton had to come from behind in his first match to beat Pedro Cachin in four sets but his second-round match against Dominic Thiem was over after one game of the second set, with the Australian having to retire. There was another four-set victory over Aslan Karatsev and last time out Shelton beat a seeded compatriot in Tommy Paul, 6-4, 6-3, 4-6, 6-4.
