We’re into the semifinals of the 2023 Davis Cup with Finland and Australia firmly focused on reach the final. After finishing second in Group D with a record of 2-1 to secure their spot in the quarterfinals, Finland had a potential tough draw against Canada.
Things got a lot harder for Finland as they lost the first singles game with Patrick Kaukovalta beaten in straight sets by Milos Raonic. With the tie on the line, Otto Virtanen stepped up in the second singles game with a straight-set victory over Gabriel Diallo. The comeback was complete in the doubles game with Harri Heliovaara and Virtanen teaming up to beat Alexis Galarneau and Vasek Pospisil, again in straight sets.
Australia also had to come from behind to win their quarterfinal, but they were a lot closer to going out. Qualification to the quarterfinals was secured with a second-placed finished in Group B, thanks to wins over France and Switzerland alongside their defeat to Great Britain.
Australia were paired with Czech Republic in the quarterfinals, with Jordan Thompson losing the opening singles match to Tomas Machac. Alex de Minaur took on Jiri Lehecka with the tie on the line and could have been on his way out, losing the first set with the second going to the tiebreaker. But De Minaur managed to get over the line and took the third set. In the doubles match things were slightly easier, with Matthew Ebden and Max Purcell beaten Lehecka and Adam Pavlasek in straight sets.
