This weekend sees a reduced fixture list as the Premier League enters a winter break. But there are still five intriguing matchups, with implications at both ends of the table.

Friday night’s action comes from Turf Moor where 19th-placed Burnley host the team immediately above them in the table, Luton Town. Clarets’ manager Vincent Kompany won’t openly admit it but he is surely approaching this as an absolute must win. Defeat would leave them a daunting seven points from safety.

The two sides come into this game in similar form with Burnley having picked up four points from their last five matches and Luton faring slightly better with six points over the same period. Sportsbook CopyBet have the home team as 10/11 favourites with the draw at 12/5 and the Hatters 14/5 to travel back down south with all three points.

The pick of Saturday’s action comes from St James’ Park where Newcastle host Manchester City. The Magpies have already beaten Pep Guardiola’s men on Tyneside, knocking them out of the League Cup earlier in the season. But Newcastle’s form since has been decidedly indifferent and with Kevin De Bruyne back in the City side, it’s easy to see why the defending champions are heavy favourites for the win, at 11/20.

This fixture has produced an avalanche of goals in recent years with a whopping 21 in the last four games. Over 4.5 goals in this weekend’s match is on offer at 10/3.

Sunday sees struggling Everton take on high flying Aston Villa and the form guide would suggest that 7/5 is good value on Unai Emery’s side. Recent history would further support that. Villa have won on each of their last three visits to Goodison Park and haven’t tasted defeat against the Toffees, home or away, since March 2016.

The weekend’s action is rounded off by Manchester United vs Tottenham at Old Trafford, another fixture that has seen its fair share of goals over the years. United are the very definition of inconsistent at the moment, with three wins, two draws and five defeats in their last 10 in all competitions. But Spurs are without key attackers Son Heung-min and James Maddison so the draw may well appeal to some at 14/5.

Spurs are on the longest current scoring run of any team in the division at the moment, having netted in their last 32 Premier League games. CopyBet price them up at 2/9 to extend that run to 33 by getting on the scoresheet at Old Trafford.
