Carlos Alcaraz continues the defence of his US Open crown in the round of 16 against Italian Matteo Arnaldi. The Spaniard will lose the world no.1 spot come the end of the tournament, but he will still have eyes on winning back-to-back US Opens. Should he win, Alcaraz would become the first man to retain the US Open since Roger Federer won five-in-a-row between 2004 and 2008.

Unlike some minor tournaments there are no byes for the top seeds, so Alcaraz entered in the first round and was 3-2 up in his second set against Dominik Koepfer before his opponent had to retire. There was a straight set victory in the second round against Lloyd Harris before a barnstormer against Dan Evans. Although Alcaraz won 6-2, 6-3, 4-6, 6-3, he was given a match by the Brit and there were a handful of quality rallies and winners from both players. But in the end, Alcaraz’s quality proved to be too much.

Hoping to pull off an upset here is Arnaldi, who is participating in the main draw of the US Open for the first time in what has been a breakthrough year. Arnaldi already has a big scalp to his name beating Casper Ruud at the Madrid Open, which helped him break into the top 100 for the first time. The Italian is now no.61 in the world and made his main draw debuts at the French Open and Wimbledon.

Last year Arnaldi only made it to the third round of qualifying at the US Open, but now he has three main draw wins to his name. Like Alcaraz, Arnaldi won in the first round as his opponent retired in the second set, but he was made to work for his five-set victory over Arthur Fils in his next match. There was a straightforward victory in the third round, though, as Arnaldi beat 16th seed Cameron Norrie 6-3, 6-4, 6-3.

Prediction: Carlos Alcaraz in straight sets
