Carlos Alcaraz gets his Cincinnati Open underway in the second round, taking on Australian qualifier Jordan Thompson. Alcaraz is, of course, the defending Wimbledon champion but will also be looking to use Cincinnati as preparation for the defence of his US Open crown having beaten Casper Ruud in last year’s final.
After claiming his maiden Wimbledon crown in July, Alcaraz’s next tournament came in the Canadian Open last week, but he didn’t have the best of starts to the hard court season. Although he won his first match in straight sets, Alcaraz had to come from behind to beat Hubert Hurkacz in the second round before losing in three sets to Tommy Paul in the quarter-finals.
Thompson, meanwhile, started his North American stint with the Hall of Fame Tennis Open, beating Brit Liam Broady en route to the quarter-finals. There was then a first-round exit at the Atlanta Open before Thompson made it to the quarter-finals of the Citi Open in Washingron, before losing to Taylor Fritz in the quarter-finals.
The Australian is already three games deep at the Cincinnati Open, having to come through qualifying to secure his spot in the main draw. Alexandre Muller was beaten in three sets and Marc-Andrea Husler in two for Thompson to make it to the first round, where he beat John Isner 7-6 (5), 7-6 (2).
