The first Shanghai Masters since 2019, Carlos Alcaraz wasn’t even playing senior tennis the last time this tournament was played, but now he is the top seed and world no.2.
After bowing out of the US Open at the semi-final stage, there was another final four exit for Alcaraz in the China Open earlier this month, losing to Jannik Sinner in straight sets. Given a bye to the second round, Alcaraz hasn’t dropped a set in his two matches so far, beating Gregoire Barrere and Dan Evans, the latter a 7-6 (1), 6-4, victory.
Despite being 18th seed for the tournament, Dimitrov is the fifth-highest ranked player left at the Shanghai Masters, with a lot of big names falling very early. The Bulgarian has made it to the quarter-finals in each of his past two tournaments, finishing at the semi-final stage at the Chengdu Open before falling in the final eight to Sinner at the China Open.
Dimitrov is making his return to the Shanghai Open for the first time since 2017 when he reached the quarter-finals, his best run at the tournament after a spate of second-round exits. Like Alcaraz, Dimitrov entered at the second round and is yet to drop a set. In his first match, Dimitrov beat Aleksandar Vukic before knocking out 13th seed Karen Khachanov with a 7-6 (6), 6-4, win.
