Carlos Alcaraz’s quest to retain his US Open crown continues in the semi-finals, but it’s a tough battle for the Spaniard. The 20-year-old won the tournament last year by beating Casper Ruud in four sets in the final, and now he’s looking to become the first man to retain the US Open since Roger Federer.
Entering the US Open off the back of victory at Wimbledon over Novak Djokovic, Alcaraz has an easy draw in the first round, leading in the second set before opponent Dominik Koepfer had to retire. Lloyd Harris then fell in straight sets before Dan Evans made Alcaraz work hard for his four-set victory. But normal service was resumed with Matteo Arnaldi and Alexander Zverev both beaten in straight sets, the latter a 6-3, 6-2, 6-4 victory in the quarter-finals.
Daniil Medvedev will be tough opposition, however, as the third seed looks to win his second US Open having also claimed victory in 2021. The 27-year-old was a semi-finalist at Wimbledon just a few months ago but his journey there was ended by Alcaraz in straight sets, en route to claiming the crown.
Medvedev hasn’t had it easy at the US Open, needing to beat some big names to back it this far. Attila Balazs, Christopher O’Connell and Sebastian Baez all fell in the first three rounds, and in the round of 16, Medvedev had to come from a set down to beat 13th seed Alex de Minaur. In the quarter-finals, eighth seed Andrey Rublev fell to Medvedev 6-4, 6-3, 6-4, in what was a heated affair — due to the weather, with temperatures reaching 35 degrees.
