Brit Cameron Norrie starts his Australian Open campaign this week, hoping to achieve his best ever finish at the tournament. Norrie is now at his seventh Australian Open, six of which have seen him in the main draw, with a failure in qualifying on his debut in 2018. However, Norrie has only made it as far as the third round, falling at that stage in 2021 and 2023.
Last year, Norrie was beaten by Jiri Lehecka as the 11th seed, despite leading on sets twice. He’s not had an ideal start to 2024 either. After winning his first match at the Auckland Classic, Norrie had to pull out from his quarter-final showdown due to a wrist injury. It’s not the best preparation for the Australian Open, and Norrie will be hoping for a full recovery ahead of this match.
Hoping to capitalise on Norrie perhaps not being 100 per cent is Juan Pablo Varillas, who is at the Australian Open for just the second time. The Peruvian made his tournament debut last year, as a lucky loser, but fell in the first round of Alexander Zverev.
However, Varillas had a good year overall and rose as high as 60th in the world, his best ever standing. Like Norrie, Varillas didn’t have a good preparation for the Australian Open. The Peruvian took part at the Adelaide international but lost in his first qualifying game, beaten in three sets despite being seeded.
Prediction: Cameron Norrie in four sets
