Real Madrid and Atalanta will compete in the first European club trophy of the season, the UEFA Super Cup.

Real Madrid won the Champions League by defeating Borussia Dortmund in June, while Atalanta claimed the Europa League title by beating Bayer Leverkusen in Dublin.

The two teams will now face off in Warsaw to vie for the Super Cup, with Madrid aiming to secure the first trophy of the Kylian Mbappé era.

This will be Madrid’s ninth appearance in the Super Cup (five wins and three losses). Having lost their first two finals, they won the next four but were beaten by their neighbours Atlético de Madrid in 2018 before defeating Eintracht Frankfurt in their most recent appearance in 2022.

This is Atalanta’s first Super Cup appearance. They are the 41st club to feature and the fourth successive debutant after Villarreal in 2021 and Eintracht Frankfurt (2022) — who both lost — and 2023 winners Manchester City.
