The Community Shield is the traditional curtain raiser for the Premier League season, happening one week before England’s top flight gets underway. This year it’s a Manchester derby, just the third in Community Shield history.

Man City enter as defending Premier League champions, as they have in each of the past three years. But it hasn’t been a happy run. Pep Guardiola’s side have lost all three of those Community Shield finals. In 2021 they were beaten by Leicester, a year later Liverpool beat them and last year Arsenal took the trophy on penalties.

They last won the trophy in 2019, beating Liverpool on penalties. Three years earlier came Man Utd last success as they beat Premier League champions Leicester 2-1 as the FA Cup holders. Then, they saw Jesse Lingard’s opener cancelled out by Jamie Vardy before Zlatan Ibrahimovic won the game late on.
