Regardless of what happens at the US Open, Novak Djokovic will be the new world no.1. But that doesn’t mean he won’t go for glory and his third Grand Slam of the year. After taking the Australian and French Open, Djokovic’s Calendar Slam dreams were only halted by a loss to Carlos Alcaraz in the final at Wimbledon.

A two-time US Open champion, Djokovic is back at Flushing Meadows for the first time since 2021 when he was a beaten finalist for the sixth time. Djokovic started this season’s tournament with straight-set victories over Alexandre Muller and Bernabe Zapata Miralles. In the third round, Djokovic was made to work hard, coming from two sets down against compatriot Laslo Djere. But normal service was resumed with straight-set victories over Borna Gojo and Taylor Fritz, the latter a 6-1, 6-4, 6-4 win in the quarter-finals.

Looking to end Djokovic’s tournament with a shock is Ben Shelton, the only unseeded man left at the US Open. In fact, it’s the top three seeds and Shelton, who is in the main draw at the US Open for just the second time. Shelton has also already bettered his best ever run at a Grand Slam, previously reaching the quarter-finals of the Australian Open earlier this year before losing to compatriot Tommy Paul.

At Flushing Meadows, Shelton had to come from behind in his first match to beat Pedro Cachin in four sets but his second-round match against Dominic Thiem was over after one game of the second set, with the Australian having to retire. Shelton’s four-set victory run resumed from the third round, with Aslan Karatsev, Tommy Paul and Frances Tiafoe all beaten in four. Shelton’s 6-2, 3-6, 7-6 (7), 6-2 victory came in the quarter-finals, ensuring Shelton was the last American standing.

Prediction: Novak Djokovic in three sets
