The 2023 Davis Cup Finals group stage continues with the second round of matchups. Australia and France are in Group B alongside Great Britain and Switzerland, and had differing results in their opening ties.
France’s Davis Cup team consists of Adrian Mannarino, Ugo Hubert, Arthur Fils, Edouard Roger-Vasselin and Nicolas Mahut — the latter duo being the go-to doubles arrangement. In France’s first tie they were up against a Swiss team which included Dominic Striker and Stan Wawrinka, and cruised to a 3-0 victory.
In the opening singles match, Mannarino came from behind to beat Stricker while Humbert dispatched Wawrinka in two sets. Then, Mahut and Roger-Vasselin combined to beat Wawrinka and Marc-Andrea Husler in straight sets in the doubles.
Australia, meanwhile, have world no.12 Alex de Minaur in their team — the highest-ranked singles player in Group B. De Minaur is joined in Australia’s team by Max Purcell, Jordan Thompson, Thanasi Kokkinakis and Matthew Ebden, ranked eighth for doubles.
Ebden’s quality proved to be the difference in the doubles match as he teamed with Purcell to beat Great Britain’s Dan Evans and Neal Skupski in straight sets. However, that was just a consolation. In the two singles matches, Kokkinakis was beaten in three sets by Jack Draper and De Minaur lost to Evans, also in three.
