The top eight players in the world flocked to Turin this year with the hopes of being crowned the best player in 2023. We’re in the 54th edition of the ATP Finals, the last singles tournament of the year for senior players (not including the Davis Cup).
Novak Djokovic is the defending champion, beating Holger Rune in last year’s final, and he’s back to fight for his crown. The Serbian has been in a battle with Carlos Alcaraz all year to be world No.1 in the world, most recently reclaiming top spot at the US Open, which he won. The victory, ended a seven-year wait for victory in the ATP Finals for Djokovic but was his sixth success overall, levelling Roger Federer as the joint-most successful player in the tournament’s history.
Last year, Alcaraz was the world No.1 but missed the ATP Finals due to injury, being replaced by Taylor Fritz. World No.8 Holger Rune is also making his debut at the ATP Finals, just about sneaking into the final eight ahead of Hubert Hurkacz.
Alongside Djokovic, there were three more former winners at the ATP Finals hoping to add another victory. Daniil Medvedev won in 2020, a year after Stefanos Tsitsipas claimed his maiden glory. Medvedev was also a runner-up in 2021, where he was beaten by Alexander Zverev who had also won the ATP Finals in 2018. The German is the only other active player to have won multiple ATP Finals alongside Djokovic.
Completing the top eight were Jannik Sinner and Andrey Rublev, the fourth and fifth seeds, respectively.
The ATP Finals was split into two groups of four, labelled the green group and red group. The green group sees Djokovic, Sinner, Tsitsipas and Rune face each other once in a round-robin format, with the top two advancing to the semi-finals. The red group pits Alcaraz, Medvedev, Rublev and Zverev against each other, again with the top two advancing.
The groups are ranked on matches won, but ties are then broken by matches played, then sets and games won (as a percentage). If two players are still tied after that, then the head-to-head record will come into play; for three-player ties, the percentage of sets won and then percentage of games won are used. ATP rankings is the final tiebreaker if, somehow, there is still no separating players.
The route to the final was also decided, with the green group winner playing the red group runner-up, and the red group winner playing the green group runner-up.
And from eight we are now down to just two. Djokovic and Sinner advanced from the green group, with Alcaraz and Medvedev qualifying from the red group. In the semi-finals, Sinner and Djokovic won their respective matches to set up the final, the latter beating Alcaraz in a fantastic clash.
