We’re into the second week of action for the 2023/24 EuroLeague season, and Anadolu Efes will be hoping to get their first win. The 2021 and 2022 champions didn’t even make it into the play-offs last season, finishing 11th in the league with a record of 17-17. That wouldn’t even be enough to secure a play-in spot this year. But they’ve had a tough start to the new campaign, with two unfortunate fixtures.

Before taking on Real Madrid, Anadolu Efes faced Barcelona, who have finished in the top four in each of the past three seasons including in 2021 when they were losing finalists to Anadolu Efes. This was a pretty comprehensive victory for Barcelona, who took a six-point lead at the break and then extended their advantage by 11 points in the final two quarters.

Real Madrid, meanwhile, started the defence of their title with victory. The Spanish side lost the 2022 final to Anadolu Efes but bounced back to beat Olympiacos last season to claim a record-extending 11th crown. After finished third in the regular season, Real Madrid beat Partizan and Barcelona to reach the finals, before a one-point victory over Olympiacos.

Although Real Madrid did beat Baskonia in their season opener last week, it wasn’t a smooth win. In fact, Real Madrid had to come from behind. The defending champions went into the final quarter down 67-62, but turned things around thanks to Guershon Yabusele and Facudno Campazzo.
