The winner of the tournament in 2021, Alexander Zverev has once again made a deep run at the Cincinnati Open and now finds himself in the semi-finals. To reach this stage, the German has seen off three players in the world’s top 50, including an impressive 2-1 win over ATP No.3 Daniil Medvedev in the third round. Ranked 17th in the world, Zverev is in the midst of a modest 2023, winning 38 and losing 19 overall in 2023, while his 11-8 hard court record is hardly convincing. That said, he has history in this tournament and cannot be written off.

Zverev will, of course, be the huge underdog in this semi-final. That’s because he meets world No.2 and the most successful player in tennis history Novak Djokovic, who remains on a collision course to meet Carlos Alcaraz in the final. Djokovic has barely broken a sweat in Cincinnati so far, going 1-0 up against Alejandro Davidovich Fokina in round one before seeing the Spaniard retire from the match. From there, Djokovic dispatched Gael Monfils and Taylor Fritz in straight sets. Djokovic has won 36 of his 41 matches overall this year, while he’s lost just one of 19 on hard court.

This will be the 12th meeting between these players, with Zverev enjoying more success than you might expect, beating Djokovic four times to date. It was Zverev who won the most recent meeting, too, though that came back in 2021.

Prediction: Djokovic to win 2-1
