Zverev has fond memories of the Italian Open, with the German winning the title in 2017 — beating Novak Djokovic in the final, no less — before losing another final against Rafael Nadal the following year. The 27-year-old looks in the mood this time around as well, beating Aleksandar Vukic of Australia in straight sets in his first match (6-0, 6-4) to extend his overall record in 2024 to 23 wins from 32 matches. Zverev has already reached the Australian Open semi-finals this year and, currently ranked fifth in the world, he’ll fancy his chances of getting off the mark in terms of ATP titles here.
Up next is Darderi of Italy. The 22-year-old is still building the platform for what could be a solid career and has shown that potential by beating Denis Shapovalov of Canada (2-1) and Argentina’s Mariano Navone (2-0) to progress in Rome. Darderi — who is preparing to face Zverev for the first time — has won 20 of his 30 games so far in 2024 in a run that has sealed the Cordoba Open title. It’s surely only a matter of time until he makes his Grand Slam debut.
