Alexander Zverev’s preparation for the US Open continues in Cincinnati, and the German will also be aiming to reclaim a crown he didn’t technically lose. In 2021, Zverev won the Cincinatti Open by beating Andrey Rublev in the final but he wasn’t able to defend his crown the following year, missing a large part of the season due to an ankle injury.
Returning at the start of the year, Zverev has reached the semi-final of the French Open, while also reaching the fourth round in three of his six entries on the ATP 1000 tour. However, last time out at the Canadian Open, Zverev only made it to the second round, losing to Alejandro Davidovich Fokina in straight sets.
Grigor Dimitrov, meanwhile, has had a decent year with good performances at the top level without ever really looking like going all the way. At the Grand Slams, Dimitrov reached the third round of the Australian Open before going a stage further at both the French Open and Wimbledon. But on the ATP 1000 tour, the third round has been Dimitrov’s limit.
While a number of players were at the Canadian Open to begin their hard court season, Dimitrov travelled to Washington for the Citi Open where, as fifth seed, he made it to the semi-finals before losing to Dan Evans. Like Zverev, Dimitrov is also a previous winner of the Cincinnati Open, beating Nick Kyrgios to win the tournament in 2017.
Prediction: Alexander Zverev in straight sets
