Daniil Medvedev continues his preparation for the US Open with the Cincinnati Open, entering at the second round as the third seed for the tournament. Medvedev has a good record at the Cincinnati open, making it to the semi-finals in three of the past four years, a run that started with him winning the tournament in 2017 by beating David Goffin. Even when Medvedev didn’t make the semi-finals in 2020, there was still a run to the quarter-finals.
After kickstarting the hard court season with a quarter-final exit at the Canadian Open, Medvedev opened the Cincinnati Open against Lorenzo Musetti, whom he had beaten in Toronto. And it was a similar story this week, with Medvedev easing to a 6-3, 6-2 victory.
Standing in his path in the third round, though, is Alexander Zverev who will be looking to reclaim a crown he didn’t technically lose. In 2021, Zverev won the Cincinnati Open by beating Andrey Rublev in the final but he wasn’t able to defend his crown the following year, missing a large part of the season due to an ankle injury.
Prior to the start of the Cincinnati Open, Zverev had reached the fourth round in three of his six entries to tournament on the ATP 1000 tour, but he did only make it to the second round at the Canadian Open. Unlike Medvedev, Zverev had to enter the Cincinnati Open in the first round, beating Grigor Dimitrov before knocking out Yoshihito Nishioka 7-5, 6-4.
