We’re now into the semi-finals of the China Open, and second-seed Daniil Medvedev will still be hoping to go all the way. Medvedev was the beaten finalist at the US Open in his most recent tournament, losing in straight sets to Novak Djokovic having knocked Carlos Alcaraz out in the semi-finals.

It meant yet another tournament without victory for the world No.3, who last celebrated glory at the Italian Open in May. Medvedev opened things in China with a straight-set victory over Tommy Paul, before beating Alex de Minaur without dropping a set. In the quarter-finals, Medvedev did need three to beat Ugo Humbert, eventually winning 6-4, 3-6, 6-1.

On the other side of this match, Alexander Zverev is the eighth seed and at the China Open for the sixth time. His best finish came last time out in 2019 as he reached the semi-finals, losing to Stefanos Tsitsipas.

Zverev has already tasted success in China this year, winning in Chengdu last month, so he’ll be hoping that momentum can carry through in Beijing. The German has had a bit of a rough ride to the semi-finals, having to come from a set down in each of his first two matches against Diego Schwartzmann and Alejandro Davidovich Fokina. He also needed three sets to beat Nicolas Jarry in the quarter-finals, winning 6-1, (5) 6-7, 6-3.

Prediction: Daniil Medvedev in three sets
