It’s seven years since Rafael Nadal won his fifth Madrid Open title and a lot has happened to the Spanish icon since then, with plenty of Grand Slam titles coming until injury derailed him in 2023. Nadal finally returned to the ATP tour this year, but has seen his ranking slip all the way down to 512th in the world and with a lot of hard work needed to get back to former glories, especially at 37 years old. There have been some positive signs, however, with Nadal winning four of his six matches so far this year. Regardless of the outcome here, it’ll always be a spectacle when Nadal takes to the court in Spain.
Alex De Minaur will present a huge test for Nadal. The Australian is ranked 11th in the world and has won 23 of his 31 matches in 2024 so far. In fact, his most recent victory was against Nadal himself, knocking him out of the Barcelona Open in straight sets just 10 days ago before a disappointing straight-sets defeat to French teenager Arthur Fils.
That victory over Nadal was De Minaur’s second in five head-to-head meetings with the Spaniard across their careers so far, and the 25-year-old hasn’t lost in this fixture since January 2020.
