Otte will be carrying the hopes of a nation on Saturday as the last remaining German in the 2022 Stuttgart Open. It’s been six years since a German last appeared in the final of the Stuttgart Open, with Philipp Kohlscreiber losing to Dominic Thiem in 2016, and you have to go back to 1991 to find the last German winner: Michael Stich.
The 28-year-old hasn’t done anything wrong en route to the semi-finals so far, yet to drop a set after entering at the round of 32 against compatriot Daniel Altmaier. He navigated that match in straight sets, winning 7-6 (2), 7-6 (4) to set up a tough last-16 tie against fourth seed Denis Shapovalov. But two tie-break wins saw Otte take the scalp of Shapovalov 7-6 (6), 7-6 (4) in what can only be seen as a shock. And Otte sailed to the semi-finals without having to pick up his racket as Benjamin Bonzi had to withdraw due to illness.
But it’ll be no easy ride for Otte in the final four, with second-seed Berrettini having his eye on glory. As one of the top seeds in the tournament, Berrettini earned a bye to the second round where he faced qualifier Radu Albot. It wasn’t a straightforward match for the Italian though as he was taken to a third set, eventually winning 6-2, 4-6, 6-3.
That win set up a quarter-final tie against sixth-seed Lorenzo Sonego and again Berrettini needed three sets to get past his opponent. This time, though, Berrettini had to come from behind against his compatriot to take the match 3-6, 6-3, 6-4, winning the final game on his serve. Berrettini is now just two wins away from a second Stuttgart Open title, previously winning in 2019 when he beat Felix Auger-Aliassime in the final.
Prediction: Matteo Berrettini to win in three sets
