Oscar Otte will be hoping to continue his climb back up the rankings by qualifying for the main draw at Wimbledon. A year ago the German was ranked 36th in the world, his highest-ever standing in men’s tennis, and made it to the third round of Wimbledon before losing to Carlos Alcaraz who was beginning his journey to the top. After Wimbledon, Otte underwent surgery on his knee and his form suffered on his return, dropping the German to 141st with first-round exits at the US, Australian and French Opens since.

There was also a qualifying-round exit at the Monte-Carlo Masters, and in preparation for Wimbledon Otte actually fared better in the Doubles side of the Halle Open, making it to the semi-finals with Jan-Lennard Struff while exiting the Singles tournament at the first round. At Wimbledon so far, Otte has knocked out Benoit Paire and Leandro Riedi, the latter a 6-3, 3-6, 6-3, victory.

On the other side of this match, Marc Polmans will be hoping to make the main draw at Wimbledon for the second time, having reached the second round in 2021. That was also the last time Polmans has made the main draw of any Grand Slam, with five qualifying exits as well as absences at Wimbledon and the French Open last year. This year, it’s been two second qualifying round exits for Polman, currently 175th in the world.

Having suffered an early qualifying defeat at Ilkley, Polmans secured what was perhaps a slight shock victory in the first qualifying round at Wimbledon, beating seeded Andrea Vavassori in straight sets. Then, in the second qualifying round, the South African came from behind to beat Zachary Svajda 4-6, 6-3, 6-3.

Prediction: Oscar Otte in straight sets
