Ons Jabeur is competing in the Italian Open for the third time and she’s already smashed her previous personal best. In her tournament debut in 2019 she bowed out in the qualifying rounds and 2020 she made it to the first round before losing (she withdrew in 2021). As the ninth seed going into the tournament Jabeur did have to contest the first round and she got through that in straight sets, beating Sorana Cirstea 6-0 7-6.
In the second round it was another straight-sets victory over Australian Ajla Tomljanovic, winning 7-5 6-2, and Jabeur beat qualifier Yulia Putintseva in the third round 6-3 6-2. That win set up an interesting quarter-final between Jabeur and fourth seed Maria Sakkari, who had knocked Coco Gauff out of the previous round. Things got off to a rocky start with Jabeur losing the first set fairly easily, but the Moroccan bounced back to take the match 1-6 7-5 6-1.
Daria Kasatkina also started in the first round at the 2022 Italian Open, but as one of the unseeded players. The 25-year-old is in her seventh year of the tournament but has never made it this far, bowing out at the third round on four occasions including in 2020 when she had to retire in the first set of their match with Victoria Azarenka. But this time around she’s taken control.
Kasatkina has dropped just one set en route to the semi-finals, starting her journey with a 6-4 6-3 victory over Tamara Zidansek in the first round. She then beat 2021 US Open runner up Leylah Fernandez 4-6 6-3 7-6 (7-2) with the Canadian the only player to take a set off Kasatkina so far. Some might have expected the 25-year-old’s journey to end there, up against second seed Paula Badosa in the third round but Kasaktina cruised through, winning 6-4 6-4. And in the quarter-finals, Kasatkina was 6-4 3-2 up when opponent Jil Teichmann had to retire due to injury.
Prediction: Ons Jabeur to win in straight sets
