Manchester City will be seeking a swift return to winning ways when they travel to Olympiacos in the Champions League on Wednesday at 5:55 PM (UK time).

Since beating the Greek side 3-0 at the start of November, Pep Guardiola’s men have only managed one point from their last two Premier League games, drawing 1-1 with Liverpool before falling to a 2-0 defeat at the hands of Tottenham Hotspur.

Even so, City are still top of Group C in the Champions League and travel to Piraeus safe in the knowledge that a win will seal their place in the round-of-16 having already taken nine points from six games.

An away trip to Olympiacos is never easy under any circumstances but the perennial Greek champions head into this tie off the back of two consecutive Super League wins without conceding a goal, including a 1-0 triumph over rivals Panathinaikos last time out.

Will Manchester City book their place in the Champions League knockout rounds or will Olympiacos keep their own qualification hopes alive?

Olympiacos & Man City’s previous line-ups:

Olympiacos (vs Panathinaikos): Sa; Drager, Semedo, Cisse, Rafinha; M’Vila, Bouchalakis, Camara; Randelovic, Fortounis, Masouras.
Man City (vs Tottenham): Ederson; Walker, Dias, Laporte, Cancelo; Rodri, Silva, De Bruyne; Mahrez, Jesus, Torres.

Key playmaker Mathieu Valbuena joins Youssef El-Arabi, Ahmed Hassan Mahgoub and Vasilis Sourlis are all on the sidelines. Bruma, Jose Holebas and Wolves loanee Ruben Vinagre are all doubts.

Players to watch:

Olympiacos: With chief creator Mathieu Valbuena — who has laid-on eight chances in the Champions League this season — out of action, the job of picking City’s defensive lock will most likely fall to Kostas Fortounis. The 51-time Greece international has created three chances in just 49 minutes of continental action this season, while he’s also notched more assists in the Greek Super League (3) than any other Olympiacos player, adding two goals to his tally for good measure, too. Fortounis is mobile, tricky and has the vision to split the opposition defence in an instant, so it’s imperative Guardiola keeps an eye on him throughout the 90 minutes — expect Rodri to be close by at all times.

Manchester City: Guardiola’s men have been suffering an uncharacteristic dry spell in front of goal in recent weeks, scoring just five times in their last six Premier League games. That hasn’t been in a problem on the continent, however, with City netting three goals in each of their Champions League games so far and three of those strikes have come from Spanish forward, Ferran Torres. Despite firing blanks in the Premier League, the forward has bagged a goal in each of City’s European victories so far and is now looking to become just the third player in club history to score in four consecutive Champions League games after Sergio Aguero (March 2019) and Raheem Sterling (November 2017). Torres also netted a hat-trick in Spain’s recent 6-0 thrashing of Germany in the Uefa Nations League and will head to Greece confident of adding to his tally once again.
