Novak Djokovic begins his defence of the Italian Open crown on Friday, looking to win the tournament for the sixth time. The Serb really has an incredible record in Italy, not only winning six times but also reaching the final on six more occasions and making it to the quarter-finals in all but his first appearance at the tournament.
However, 2023 has been a year of relative inactivity on the big stage, with just two tournament appearances at Grand Slams and ATP Masters 1000. Djokovic won the Australian Open but was then shocked in the third round of the Monte-Carlo Masters, losing in three sets to 16th-seed Lorenzo Musetti.
Looking to join Musetti in causing an upset is Argentine Tomas Martin Etcheverry but the 23-year-old doesn’t have the greatest of records against the big names. At the Australian Open he was beaten in the second round by Jannik Sinner, and he has also suffered early exits at the Cordoba Open, Rio Open, Indian Wells, Miami Open, Barcelona Open and Madrid Open. There was a final appearance at the Chile Open and quarter-final in the Argentina Open, but Etcheverry was beaten by Cam Norrie in the latter.
Entering the 2023 Italian Open in the first round, Etcheverry beat Frenchman Luca Van Assche in straight sets 7-6 (7), 6-3.
