Novak Djokovic’s defence of his Italian Open crown continues into the third round of the tournament, with the Serb looking to win in Rome for the sixth time. This is just Djokovic’s third appearance on the big stage this year, after the Australian Open and Monte-Carlo Masters, and there were very differing outcomes.

In Australia, Djokovic claimed yet another Grand Slam but in the third round of the Monte-Carlo Masters he was beaten by Lorenzo Musetti. Entering the 2023 Italian Open in the second round, Djokovic cruised past Tomas Martin Etcheverry in straight sets, beating the Argentine 7-6 (5), 6-2.

Looking to join Musetti in upsetting Djokovic in the third round of an ATP Masters 1000 tournament this year is Grigor Dimitrov, but he hasn’t had the best of years so far. Dimitrov is yet to make it past the third round in any of the big tournaments he has entered in 2023, losing at this stage three times with two second-round exits.

Dimitrov will take heart, however, from the fact that he has already made it further this year than he ever has before at the Italian Open, with his previous best being a second-round finish. This year, Dimitrov entered in the second round as one of the seeded players and beat Stan Wawrinka 6-4, 7-6 (3), a big name to knock out early on even if the Swiss isn’t the player he once was.
