Norwich City team news

It’s been a miserable return to Premier League action for Norwich who come into this weekend’s clash sitting at the foot of the table with 10 points: only three sides bottom e at the start of Boxing Day have avoided relegation: West Bromwich Albion in 2004/05, Sunderland 2013/14 and Leicester in 2014/15. If they’re going to escape demotion back to England’s second division then goals must start flowing, the Canaries have failed to score in a league-high 11 different matches this season. In top-flight history no side has ever scored fewer goals before Christmas than the eight they’ve netted this season. Dean Smith has no fewer than five players — Mathias Normann (pelvis), Christoph Zimmermann (ankle), Milot Rashica (groin), Grant Hanley (shoulder) and Andrew Omobamidele (back) — ruled out for certain, and he’ll be determined to become the first Norwich boss to win on Boxing Day, as the East Anglia side have played more Premier League games on Boxing Day without ever winning (one draw and six losses).

Norwich City XI: Krul; Williams, Kabak, Gibson, Giannoulis; Gilmour, Sorensen, McLean; Placheta, Pukki, Sargent.

Arsenal team news

It’s already been a season of highs and lows for Arsenal who come into this Boxing Day clash with Norwich seeking to register a fourth Premier League win on the bounce. History is somewhat on their side as the Londoners have lost just two of their 23 games on Boxing Day (which includes 14 wins); a 3-2 loss at Coventry in 1999/00 and 4-0 at Southampton in 2015/16. Mikel Arteta, who has named an unchanged eleven across the Gunners previous four league outings, has Takehiro Tomiyasu down as a major doubt this weekend. Gabriel Martinelli should be available; the impressive young Brazilian forward has been directly involved in six goals in his last six top-flight matches (four goals and two assists) which is as many as he had in his first 33 appearances in England’s top division (five goals and one assist). To expand on this further, 52% of their Premier League goals this season have been netted by players aged 21 or under (14/27) only Leeds in 1999/00 (65%) registered a higher such ratio within a single campaign (minuts own goals).

Arsenal predicted XI: Ramsdale; Tomiyasu*, White, Gabriel, Tierney; Saka, Partey, Xhaka, Martinelli; Odegaard, Lacazette.
