“My ranking has never sort of reflected my game. That’s also due to the schedule I play. I have never really played a full schedule. I’m having a great year, if Wimbledon had given points now I’d be in the top 15 or top 20 in the world. I feel like I’m playing that level of tennis, like I’m top-10 or top-5 right now,” Nick Kyrgios said recently.

This upcoming contest will be his fifth semi-final appearance on the main tour in this calendar year and third in tournaments above the ATP 250 level. However, the Aussie has lost all his previous three completed matches at this stage against Reilly Opelka in Houston, Andy Murray in Stuttgart, and Hubert Hurkacz in Halle before receiving a walkover from Rafael Nadal at Wimbledon last month.

His previous semi-final game at the ATP Washington came in 2019 when he’d go all the way defeating Daniil Medvedev in the final and thus claiming his sixth and most recent ATP title. To say Mikael Ymer has done things the hard way this week is an understatement. The Swede has won four consecutive three-setters as the underdog against Andy Murray (7-6 (8), 4-6, 6-1), Aslan Karatsev (6-4, 3-6, 6-4), Emil Ruusuvuori (6-3, 6-7 (3), 6-4) and Sebastian Korda (6-2, 5-7, 6-3). One more win guarantees Ymer a new career-high ranking next Monday.

Prediction: Nick Kyrgios to win in three sets
