Unsurprisingly, Kyrgios’ run to his second Wimbledon quarter-final – and first since 2014 – has not been without incident.
The fiery Australian has received two fines; the first for spitting towards the crowd following his five-set victory over Paul Jubb in round one. He was also sanctioned for an obscenity at a line judge during his controversial win over fourth seed Stefanos Tsitsipas in the third round.
Nevertheless, the world number 40 let his tennis do the talking as he edged out Brandon Nakashima in round four 4-6 6-4 7-6(2) 3-6 6-2.
Meanwhile, world number 43 Garin has quietly gone about his business to reach unchartered territory in a Grand Slam. Although he arguably benefitted from the withdrawal of 2021 runner-up Matteo Berrettini, the Chilean swept aside Elias Ymer and Hugo Grenier, before overcoming Jenson Brooksby in four sets.
He then had to dig deep against Alex De Minaur; recovering from two sets down to prevail in a gripping tie-break to become the first player from his nation to reach a Slam quarter-final since Fernando Gonzalez at the 2009 US Open.
