Manchester United legends Wayne Rooney, Rio Ferdinand and Gary Neville have all admitted they would rather Manchester City win the Premier League title than Liverpool.

The trio won a combined 19 English top flight crowns during their respective spells at Old Trafford and have all revealed they couldn’t bear to see Liverpool lift their first title in 29 years.

Man City the better of two evils: Five key things to know…

  1. Liverpool currently sit atop the Premier League table, two points clear of Man City.
  2. Pep Guardiola’s side have a game in hand, which comes against rivals Man Utd.
  3. United legends Rooney, Neville and Ferdinand have all been asked for their title picks recently.
  4. All three opted for Man City, with Rooney describing a Liverpool title win as a ‘nightmare’.
  5. Meanwhile Ferdinand reckons City retaining the Premier League is the ‘better of two evils’.

Given his Everton connection, Rooney is especially rooting for the blue half of Manchester, describing a potential title win for Jurgen Klopp’s side as a ‘nightmare’.

“It’s a great reason to be out the country when those two are going head-to-head for the title,” Rooney told talkSPORT.

“I hope Man City get over the line before Liverpool. I couldn’t bear to see them win it, it would be a nightmare for any Evertonian.

“I remember in 2005 (Liverpool) won the Champions League and they’re still talking about it now so it would be another 10 or 15 years of that.”

“Man City the better of two evils”

Ferdinand shared Rooney’s sentiments, describing another title win for Man City as ‘the better of two evils’.

“This is the worst possible case scenario for someone that likes Man United, supports Man United and has played for Man United, and I’m a pundit that’s got to speak about it publicly and squirm and what not,” the former England defender told the Mirror.

“So the better of the two evils is Manchester City winning the league as I’ve seen it, I’ve been part of it.”

And given that he is part of Man Utd’s famed ‘Class of 92’, as well as his long-standing working relationship with ex-Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher, Neville will be feeling the heat of this Merseyside title challenge more than most.

During the 2013/14 season, the last time Man City and Liverpool battled it out at the top of the Premier League, Neville compared the situation to ‘having a choice of two blokes you want to nick your wife’. This is a sentiment he maintains this season.

“I said a few years ago when they were both going for the title that it is like having a choice of two blokes you want to nick your wife! It’s not changed, it’s getting worse!” he told Virgin Radio’s Breakfast Show in January.

“Do you know something? I have had for the first time in a few weeks that some United fans want Liverpool to win the title because they don’t want to see City win back-to-back titles and start a period of domination.

“I can’t bring myself to say Liverpool, I just can’t. It’s going to have to be City.”
