Tottenham Hotspur defender Danny Rose believes the club responded to Ruud Gullit’s criticism by beating Ajax.

The former Milan, Chelsea and Netherlands star spoke negatively about some of the Tottenham players following their 1-0 defeat to the Dutch side last week.

‘Rude’ Gullit silenced: Five things you need to know…

  1. Ajax defeated Tottenham Hotspur 1-0 in the Champions League semi-final first leg.
  2. This result – and Spurs’ performance – prompted Gullit to question the technical ability of Rose, Dele Alli and Victor Wanyama.
  3. Spurs were 2-0 down at half-time in the second leg – 3-0 on aggregate – before Lucas Moura’s hat-trick made history.
  4. Moura’s last-minute strike sealed an all-English final against Liverpool in June.
  5. Gullit won two Champions League titles with AC Milan.

Speaking to reporters after Tottenham’s historic evening against Ajax, Rose spoke directly about Gullit’s previous comments, stating that the club’s performance made Gullit “shut up”.

“Seeing people’s comments like Ruud Gullit after the first game and how rude he was, it’s nice we fought back and hopefully shut him up,” Rose said.

“He was very critical of individual players and saying how bad we were technically, and he’s bang out of order for that.

“That was fuel to the fire and hopefully he eats his words.”

Payback for Rose

It isn’t hard to imagine why Rose hit out at Gullit, with the Dutchman’s comments directly targeting the England international following his performance in the first leg.

With midfielders Dele Alli and Victor Wanyama also a target of Gullit’s criticism, the former Chelsea manager spoke about their disappointing first leg performance.

He said: “A lot of players were disappointing because I see them every week in the Premier League.

“Dele Alli, oh my god, technically wise so bad. Wanyama, my god, technically wise, Rose too. Like I said I see them every week and how is it possible to make so many mistakes?

“I know you’re under pressure but you need to know what to do and they didn’t.”
