Why Chelsea winger Christian Pulisic broke down in tears on international duty

Chelsea winger Christian Pulisic broke down in tears following his substitution in USA’s 2-0 defeat to Canada on Wednesday.

The American star was withdrawn around the hour mark at the BMO Field and could be seen weeping on the sidelines.

Why did Pulisic break down in tears? Five things to know…

  • Canada beat USA 2-0 on Wednesday in the CONCACAF Nations League.
  • Pulisic started the match but was taken off in the 60th minute with the scorelines level.
  • As he took his position on the bench, he could be seen breaking down in tears.
  • Head coach Berhalter says his decision to make the change was influenced by Pulisic’s struggle with “flu-like symptoms”.
  • Canada went on to clinch a first victory against the US for 34 years.

With the match stalemate prior to Pulisic’s withdrawal, Canada went on to secure a surprise 2-0 victory, their first over the US in 34 years, thanks to goals from Alphonse Davies and Lucas Cavallini.

Explaining his decision to haul off the precocious wide-man, USA head coach Gregg Berhalter says he made the call as Pulisic was exhibiting “flu-like symptoms” in the build-up to the CONCACAF Nations League match.

However, replays suggest Pulisic told his manager “I’m fine” before taking up his position on the bench.

“It can be tough”

This recent breakdown from Pulisic comes shortly after the ex-Borussia Dortmund winger spoke about handling the seismic pressure of life in the Premier League.

Pulisic completed a £58m move to Chelsea in the summer but has found playing time hard to come by in west London, though he recently rejected suggestions he is struggling to handle the pressure of playing in the English top-flight.

“This generation can be tough, for young players especially, having people talk about you, having constant pressure on your back,” he told the Players’ Tribune.

“Especially as Americans, we haven’t had a lot of top international talents throughout our years. If you’re not able to tune it out then it can be a weight on your shoulders.

“I think there are obstacles, I think not a lot of American players have really proved themselves in Europe and I think when you’re an American player and you’re trying to prove yourself amongst all these European guys or international guys that are top players who have played in these big competitions, not a whole lot of Americans have been there, it can be tough.”
