Tottenham have finally edged past Aston Villa in the race for a top-four spot and will be looking to extend their advantage over the Villans with a win at Newcastle in Saturday’s early kick-off, which will be shown live on TNT Sports.

The Magpies have their own European ambitions and gave them a big boost with an away win against Fulham last weekend, Eddie Howe’s side are now just two points behind Manchester United in sixth place.

Postecoglou ‘couldn’t care less’ about race for the top four

Despite taking advantage of Aston Villa’s recent wobbles to move up into fourth place in the Premier League, Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou stated that the battle for a top-four spot was not his focus after his side beat Nottingham Forest 3-1.

The Spurs boss told reporters that he “couldn’t care less about the race for fourth” .

Spurs are now ahead of Villa on goal difference in the race for a top-four finish and also have a game in hand on their rivals.

Postecoglou’s men do face a tricky run-in however, as they take on all three teams in the title race – Arsenal, Liverpool and Manchester City – in their final seven games of the campaign.

Depending on the performance of their fellow English teams in Europe in the rest of this season, a fifth-place finish could also offer qualification to the Champions League next term, although with this still to be confirmed Spurs can take nothing for granted.

Newcastle vs Tottenham Team News

Newcastle have had a lengthy injury list all season and that is showing no signs of changing as the campaign nears its conclusion.

The Magpies currently have 12 first-team players that are missing or doubtful for this weekend, the most of any team in the Premier League.

Defence is a particular problem for Eddie Howe’s side, with full backs Matt Targett, Valentino Livramento and Kieran Trippier all set to miss out, while central defenders Sven Botman and Jamaal Lascelles are also long-term absentees with knee injuries.

In midfield, Joelinton, Lewis Miley, Sandro Tonali and Joe Willock are all injured or suspended, while in forward areas Miguel Almiron and Callum Wilson are in the treatment room.

First-choice goalkeeper Nick Pope also remains on the sidelines for the Magpies.

Tottenham’s injury list is much more manageable than their hosts’ with Fraser Forster, Ryan Sessegnon and Manor Solomon expected to miss out for this clash.

Richarlison is a doubt with a knee injury.
