Newcastle vs Liverpool predicted XIs: Team news as Klopp explains how “world class” Mane can win the Ballon d’Or

Liverpool will look to maintain their current unbeaten run in the Premier League this year when they collide with Newcastle for Saturday’s lunchtime kick-off (12.30pm, UK time).

Jurgen Klopp’s men have been in sensational Premier League form this year, winning 12 of their 14 games and drawing the other two, which has kept them hot on Manchester City’s heels in the title race. A point currently separates the two sides, so a win for Liverpool here is simply non-negotiable.

In Eddie Howe’s Newcastle, the Reds face another side currently riding the crest of a wave. The Magpies, likewise, have enjoyed a barnstorming 2022, fast-tracking their process to once again become a serious player in the Premier League, winning 10 of their 14 games since the turn of the year.

Newcastle team news vs Liverpool: Joelinton to feature after Norwich scare

  • Ins: Joelinton
  • Outs: Callum Wilson, Jamal Lewis, Isaac Hayden, Ryan Fraser
  • Doubts: Kieran Trippier

Joelinton has played like a man possessed since Howe pitched up on Tyneside, with his form proving emblematic of the direction Newcastle want to head in under their owners. The once-mercurial Brazilian came off with a knock against Norwich at the weekend, but he is not deemed an injury concern here, abating concern from fans. Elsewhere, Callum Wilson, Jamal Lewis, Isaac Hayden and Ryan Fraser remain long-term absentees for the hosts, while Kieran Trippier is inching towards a return.

Liverpool team news vs Newcastle: Klopp to go full strength

  • Outs: Roberto Firmino
  • Doubts: Curtis Jones, Konstantinos Tsimikas

Given the circumstances surrounding the Premier League title race, there will be no rest for the wicked this weekend, with Klopp expected to go full strength against an in-form Newcastle side to ensure the Reds maintain the pressure on City. As such, Roberto Firmino remains the German’s only major injury concern, with Curtis Jones and Konstantinos Tsimikas also doubts after they missed the Champions League in midweek, so Klopp is unlikely to rotate too much.

And that could see Sadio Mane retain his starting berth in attack. The lethal forward netted on Wednesday night and has been in formidable form this campaign, both for Liverpool and at international level as Senegal won Afcon 2021, but Klopp believes his attacking fulcrum must win the Champions League to be in with a genuine shout of claiming this year’s Ballon d’Or.

On Mane’s Ballon d’Or chances, Klopp told reporters: “If you are not Messi or Ronaldo you have to win probably the Champions League, which we haven’t done yet so give us a few more weeks and then we will see where we end up.”

The Liverpool boss added about Mane’s performance in the 2-0 win over Villarreal: “He can play left, he can play central, both positions world-class.

“He started for us here at Liverpool on the right wing. Some people in the room will remember his goal at Arsenal when it was his first goal, when he cut inside and fired the ball with his left foot into the far corner. Absolutely outstanding, love it.

“There are different ways that Sadio plays and sometimes we want him to drop slightly more, but today we wanted him to stay even more between the centre-halves, keep them away and offer the runs in behind. He has the skill set for it.”

Predicted Liverpool XI vs Newcastle:

  • Alisson; Alexander-Arnold, Matip, Van Dijk, Robertson; Henderson, Fabinho, Thiago; Salah, Mane, Jota. (4-3-3)
