New Zealand vs Namibia Preview

New Zealand suffered their first ever group stage defeat in a World Cup in the opening match of the tournament last week. The concern for the All Blacks is that in all truth, France deserved their win and the three-time champions of the world looked sluggish and second-best in the contest.

Ian Foster is going to ring the changes for this match, which should give the fringe players a great chance to push their cases for inclusion in the first XV. There is a lack of real youth in the All Blacks squad, but a lot of players in their prime and ready to come in and make an impact, especially in this fixture.

Namibia are ranked 21st in the world, the second lowest ranking in the tournament, just ahead of Chile. They have been Africa’s second representative at every World Cup since 1999, but have yet to win a single match in the finals. The record defeat to the Wallabies of 142-0 in 2003 did tar the competition somewhat, but competitiveness has improved somewhat since then.

However, keeping the score down to respectable levels is likely to the extent of Namibia’s ambition here. Their squad is lacking any players at the top club level, except some experienced men in the front row, both hookers and prop Aranos Coetzee play in European club competition.
