Netherlands vs Austria build-up, previous line-ups & injury news:

The Netherlands scratched a seven-year itch when they sensationally ran out 3-2 win against Ukraine in their first major tournament game since the 2014 World Cup finals third-place match. Georginio Wijnaldum and Wout Weghorst helped Oranje race into a 2-0 lead before Andriy Shevchenko’s men struck twice in four minutes to level proceedings. When it seemed they’d snatched a draw from the jaws of victory, Denzel Dumfries nodded home an 85th minute winner, sending the Johan Cruyff Arena into raptures. The result also ended a four-match losing streak at the European Championship.

Just like the Dutch, seven was the magic number for Austria who, at the seventh time of asking, won a game at the Euros and they had their big names to thank. Stefan Lainer put Unsere Burschen in front before that lead was cancelled out. However, the untiring David Alaba teed up Michael Gregoritsch to put Austria back in front, before Marko Arnautović secured all three points with a minute from time. In seven previous competitive matches against Oranje, Austria have picked up two wins but those results have come on home soil.

  • Netherlands (vs Ukraine): Stekelenburg; De Vrij, Blind, Timber; Dumfries, De Roon, Wijnaldum, De Jong, Van Aanholt; Depay, Weghorst.
  • Austria (vs North Macedonia): Bachmann; Hinteregger, Alaba, Dragovic; Lainer, Sabitzer, Laimer, Schlager, Ulmer; Kalajdzic, Baumgartner.

De Boer has confirmed Matthijs de Ligt will start here after missing the opening game against Ukraine, though Joel Veltman and Nathan Ake will be on standby. Marko Arnautovic is suspended for Austria.

Player to watch: Memphis Depay (Netherlands)

For the first time since a 1-1 friendly draw against Spain in November 2020, the Netherlands fielded Memphis Depay for more than 75 minutes and the Moordrecht-born forward ended the contest without being able to either score or assist. It ended a stretch of seven consecutive international appearances in which he contributed for Oranje (seven goals and four assists), during which time his status as their game-winner grew exponentially, and he’ll be looking to get back on track when facing Austria on Thursday evening.
