The National Hunt Chase will bring the curtain down on a hugely exciting opening day in Cheltenham.

Inaugurated in 1860, the Grade 2 race has been run more times than any other event at the Festival.

Patrick Mullins secured yet another Willie Mullins win in last year’s race when he steered Stattler to victory in wonderful fashion.

Those two are widely expected to combine for another victory this time around, with Gaillard Du Mesnil a heavy favourite.

The seven-year-old has serious Grade 1 form, winning the Novice Chase in Leopardstown in December.

He also recorded hugely respectable third-place finishes at last year’s Broadway Novices’ Chase, as well as the Irish Grand National.

Should he prevail here, Patrick Mullins would become the first jockey to win the race on four occasions, while it would be a fourth triumph for Willie Mullins – edging him closer to Jonjo O’Neill’s record tally of six.

Another of Willie Mullins’ runners – Tenzing – will provide competition, as will Mahler Mission and Nicky Henderson’s Mister Coffey.
