Napoli vs Torino build-up & previous line-ups:

Luciano Spalletti couldn’t have asked for a better start to his Napoli managerial career. Having been appointed this summer the much-travelled Italian tactician comes into this latest round not only unbeaten in Serie A but won each of his opening seven league fixtures. If they were to win here, Napoli would equal the best start in their history in Serie A, which they put together in 2017/18 (eight). Compared to their opening seven games of that season, they’ve scored seven fewer goals (25 v 18), but have also conceded two fewer (5 v 3). It will also put them within touching distance of Roma’s league record of ten (2013/14). Spalletti’s men have had the most open play sequences of 10+ passes in the Italian top division this season (129) and more shots on target than any other Serie A side this season (48).

The Neapolitans have also lost just one of their previous 18 top-flight games against Torino (0-1 in March 2015), and they are unbeaten in their last nine home league games against The Maroons (five wins and four draws), since a 2-1 loss in May 2009. Ivan Juric’s men — who have faced fewer efforts on target than any other Serie A side (18) — come into this weekend’s game sitting 11th in the young championship table having won just two of their opening seven matches and they are currently on a three-game winless streak (two draws and one defeat). On top of that, after their 0-1 defeat at city rivals Juventus, Torino could fail to score for two consecutive Serie A games for the first time since January 2021 (against Milan and Spezia).

  • Napoli (vs Fiorentina): Ospina; Di Lorenzo, Koulibaly, Rrahmani, Rui; Ruiz, Anguissa; Lozano, Zielinski, Insigne; Osimhen.
  • Torino (vs Juventus): Milinković-Savić; Rodríguez, Bremer, Zima; Singo, Mandragora, Pobega, Aina; Brekalo, Lukic; Sanabria.

Player to watch: Dries Mertens (Napoli)

After sitting out Napoli’s opening five Serie A matches due to a combination of recovering from a shoulder injury and lacking match fitness, the mercurial Dries Mertens returned before the recent international break against Fiorentina, albeit making a six minute cameo at the Artemio Franchi stadium as his side ran out 1-2 winners. Chances are Mertens will again start this weekend’s game on the bench though if he does come off then his minutes will be far greater than last time out. His next effort will be historic to say the least. The 34-year-old Belgian forward is already all-time top goalscorer, having bagged 135 goals, but he’s level with Antonio Vojak on 102 Serie A strikes. Mertens also comes into this game with a decent record against Empoli; across eight previous league meetings against them he’s struck five times and created another four goals.
