Napoli will look to stop a run of successive Serie A defeats when they welcome 18th-placed Torino to the Diego Armando Maradona Stadium on Wednesday at 7.45pm.

Gennaro Gattuso’s side followed up a 1-0 loss against Inter Milan last week with another defeat on Sunday, firing a consecutive blank as Lazio ran out 2-0 victors in the capital. That result has left the Parthenopeans outside the top four by one point, but they will be looking to keep pace with those above them when struggling Torino travel to Campania.

Napoli vs Torino build-up, previous line-ups & injury news:

Having finished outside the top four for the first time in five years last season Gattuso will be desperate to fire the Parthenopeans back into the upper echelons of Italian football, and his quest to achieve that could be boosted when Napoli take on Torino, a club against whom they are unbeaten in 10 matches.

The Turin-based club have endured their own problems, but not just in recent weeks. Marco Giampaolo’s side are currently circling the drain in 18th with just one win across their 13 league outings this term, dropping 21 points from winning positions, at least five more than any other side in Europe’s top five leagues.

  • Napoli (vs Lazio): Ospina; Di Lorenzo, Maksimovic, Koulibaly*, Rui; Fabian, Bakayoko, Zielinski, Politano, Lozano*; Petagna.
  • Torino (vs Bologna): Milinkovic-Savic; Izzo, Lyanco*, Bremer, Rodriguez; Gojak, Rincon, Linetty; Lukic, Bonazzoli, Belotti.

Hirving Lozano and Kalidou Koulibaly were both withdrawn in the defeat to Lazio at the weekend and face an extended lay-off, with the duo not expected back until after the winter break. Elsewhere Dries Mertens and Victor Osimhen remain sidelined for the hosts, but Lorenzo Insigne returns from suspension. For Torino, Lyanco is suspended and will not make the journey.

Players to watch:

  • Napoli: With so many creative options unavailable to Gattuso for this match-up, the return of skipper Lorenzo Insigne comes at a perfect time. The Neapolitan was banned for the Lazio match owing to the red card he picked up in defeat to Inter, which prompted an irate reaction from his manager. The 29-year-old was given his marching orders after criticising the referee for awarding Inter a penalty kick, eliciting this response from Gattuso: “In England and Scotland, they tell referees to **** off all the time and nothing happens, only in Italy do players get sent off for this sort of thing.” The ex-Rangers hatchet-man will be hoping that his captain can make a positive return on the pitch this week, and he has been directly involved in 10 goals against Torino in Serie A (five goals and five assists).
  • Torino: The Bull are teetering on the brink of absolute disaster if they cannot get their season back on track. Giampaolo will be desperate to enter the winter break on a high, giving his side some hope over the festive period to return with a bang. And one player who can ensure that happens is captain Andrea Belotti. The 27-year-old is on nine goals this season and should he net against Napoli, then he will become only the third player in Torino history to reach double figures in six different Serie A seasons, after Paolo Pulici (seven) and Francesco Graziani (six).
