After a decade spent dominating world football, La Liga is still – arguably – the most talented league in the world.
Spain’s top-flight isn’t as almighty as it used to be, with all three of the top sides very much in transition, but there is massive amounts of talent still present in La Liga – especially at Barcelona, Real Madrid and Atlético Madrid.
That talent obviously takes the form of star players. Star players all around the world have always gravitated towards Barcelona and Real Madrid. But which players are the most valuable? We took a look at football’s stock market, the Football Index*, to find out.

5. Joao Felix
Club: Atlético Madrid
Football Index value: Buy: £3.59 – Sell: £3.48
Joao Felix was an absolute phenomenon for Benfica in 2018/19 and earned himself a massive €120m move to Atlético Madrid. He wowed the world in pre-season, demolishing everything before him. However, once the real football started, Felix’s form disappeared. The Portuguese has had injury issues and struggled to impose himself in an underwhelming Atleti side, but his youth and future transfer prospects see him still rank in the top five.
4. Ansu Fati
Football Index value: Buy: £3.70 – Sell: £3.52
Ansu Fati began the season trying to break into Barcelona B’s team when an injury crisis saw him emerge for the senior side. He took his chance with both hands, scoring on his debut and continuing that great form. He became the youngest Champions League goalscorer in history back in December and with three goals and one assist across all competitions looks set to play a big part under Quique Setién’s new regime. Ansu is such a phenomenal talent who is performing well at such an incredibly young age that his price has skyrocketed.
3. Eden Hazard
Club: Real Madrid
Football Index value: Buy: £3.97 – Sell: £3.85
Eden Hazard dominated the Premier League and got his dream move to Real Madrid in the summer. He cost Los Blancos the big bucks and although he’s had serious injury troubles as he tries to adapt to the demands of a superclub like Los Blancos, there have been flashes of his greatness. He has just one goal and two assists in both La Liga and Champions League, a low total, but such is the reputation he carries with him from England that he ranks as number three.
2. Toni Kroos
Club: Real Madrid
Football Index value: Buy: £4.26 – Sell: £3.94
The German looked set to have a difficult season in 2019/20, but the emergence of Fede Valverde alongside Casemiro in Real Madrid’s engine room has freed Toni Kroos to play a more expansive, risk-taking game. The midfielder has responded with a phenomenal few months that has seen his value rise from £2.20 on October 1st to its current price of £4.26. Kroos is approaching 30 but is proving that there’s plenty of life in him yet, even if he may not be at Real Madrid for too much longer.
1. Lionel Messi
Football Index value: Buy £5.06 – Sell: £4.43
Leo Messi is the best player in the world so, despite being 33, he is still ranked as La Liga’s most valuable attacker. The Argentine missed the first month of the season with injury, but that hasn’t stopped him from roaring back to the top of La Liga’s Pichichi charts with 14 goals. In fact Messi has 16 goals and nine assists across all competitions, as well as several moments of absolutely mesmeric and unquantifiable moments of genius, and is still the peerless force of footballing fantasy in the Spanish top flight.
