Moreirense currently sit second-bottom (17th) in Portugal’s Primeira Liga, on 20 points. Despite that lowly ranking, however, this side is very much within reach of safety. They trail 16th-placed Tondela by a single point and 15th-placed Arouca by just two and have been on superior (moderately, but superior all the same) form.
However, Moreirense has struggled since the start of 2022, both in terms of on-pitch results – just two wins and two draws from their last ten league games, and a lone point from their last four – and from a disciplinary perspective, having had a man sent off in two out of the last three and three of their last seven outings.
It is worth noting that, with the exception of a 5-0 hammering at the hands of Familicao in mid-February, Moreirense have done reasonably well defensively, not letting more than two goals in a game since September 19 against league-leaders Porto. Included in this is their first meeting with Sporting in late-October, in which Moreirense were dominated but let in just one goal in the 1-0 defeat.
Unfortunately, however, this highlights this side’s biggest weakness. With the exception of an early-February tilt against last place Belenenses, Moreirense struggle terribly to put the ball in the net, having failed to score multiple goals in a game since a 2-2 draw with Gil Vicente on November 26.
On the bright side, the side comes in with a clean bill of health and is catching Sporting on the heels of elimination from the Champions League; though, it must be said, it’s unlikely the visitors will be too traumatized, as they entered that second leg against Manchester City facing a 5-0 deficit.

Sporting CP team news
As we just discussed, Sporting will no doubt be disappointed with their unceremonious ouster from the Champions League, but the fact that their fate was sealed after the first leg probably does take much of the disappointment out of the exit.
Os Leões now refocus on domestic competition, where they’ve, unsurprisingly, met with far more success. Along with – again, unsurprisingly – the remaining members of Portugal’s Big Three, Porto and Benfica, Sporting are the form side in the league having taken 14 points from their last six league games.
They’ll likely be motivated by the fact that Benfica have already dropped points this weekend (a 1-1 draw with second-bottom Vizela), opening the door for second-placed Sporting to stretch their lead over Benfica (in third) to six points, while keeping pace with league-leaders Porto (who square off Sunday night against relegation-threatened Tondela), who lead Sporting by six points.
It’s worth mentioning that Sporting are facing some losses in the midfield, as they’re currently without regular Daniel Braganca, Joao Palhinha and Pedro Goncalves. However, Nuno Santos, Pablo Sarabia and Paulinho spearheading the attack, with a full-strength defence behind them dealing with Moreirense’s rather anemic attack is more than enough to comfortably secure all three points.
