Through two thirds of the first group stage of qualification for the 2023 FIBA World Cup, to be held next August and September in the books, France has already booked a spot out of Group E for second qualifying round.
The French enter play on Friday a perfect 4-0 in Group E, with an average margin of victory of roughly 20.3 points per game. They sit two games clear of both Hungary and their hosts on Friday, Montenegro, each of whom have won two of four group games thus far.
It is worth noting that Montenegro have the inside track on second place in the group (though the top three will qualify), by virtue of a +20 point difference through four games, while the Hungarians have actually been outscored by 30 points across their four contests. Assuming that each loses its remaining game to France and defeats as-yet-winless Portugal to close out group play, the table will remain unchanged.
It is worth noting that in their previous meeting – the opener of this group stage – in Pau (southwest France, near Andorra and the Spanish border), Montenegro put a massive scare into their heavily-favored hosts, leading by seven points after three quarters, before succumbing to a 73-67 defeat after a brutal final quarter. On home soil and with more to play for than France, look for Montenegro to be quite competitive (at the very least) once again on Friday evening.
